Why self-lubricating bearings matter for high-speed CNC equipment

The manufacturing process and inherent porosity

Sintered iron bearings are made using Powder Metallurgy. Fine metal powders are pressed in a precision die to form a 'green' compact. This part is then sintered in a controlled-atmosphere furnace at a temperature below the metal's melting point. This solid-state diffusion bonds the particles while intentionally creating an interconnected porous structure. Industry reports indicate this porosity represents 15-25% of the part's volume. This feature is not a defect but the foundation of the bearing's core function.

Self-lubrication for demanding applications

The high porosity, typically 20-25% by volume, is impregnated with lubricating oil. This oil contained within the porosity provides a constant lubrication film between the bushing and shaft. It eliminates the need for external lubrication systems. This allows the bearing to operate under hydrodynamic conditions, resulting in a very low coefficient of friction. For CNC equipment, this means reduced maintenance and contamination risk. Recent developments show advanced impregnation formulas can further improve performance.

Meeting CNC spindle requirements

Spindle bearings are integral components of CNC machine tools. They directly influence precision, performance, and reliability. The rapid advancement of CNC machining is characterized by high-speed operations, high loads, and a demand for greater precision. This evolution has driven changes in spindle bearing technology. Innovations are needed in materials, structural designs, and cooling. The self-contained lubrication of sintered bearings addresses several of these pressures simultaneously.

Precision and performance in production

Maximum precision and flexibility are required in bearing manufacture to meet the specific requirements of various applications. Improved durability and performance are achieved through innovative production processes. These contribute significantly to reliable functionality. For CNC equipment manufacturers, selecting a bearing that combines precision geometry with consistent, long-term lubrication is a practical engineering decision, not just a material choice.

We manufacture sintered components designed for the precision equipment sector, focusing on the material properties and tolerances this industry demands.
