Self-lubricating sintered bronze bearings represent one of powder metallurgy’s most significant and enduring success stories. The core technology revolves around creating a porous metallic structure. According to technical descriptions, the process begins with bronze powder—typically a Cu90Sn10 matrix—being compacted under high pressure to form a 'green' part. This compacted form then enters a controlled-atmosphere sintering furnace, where it is heated to temperatures just below the melting point of the constituent metals. This sintering step fuses the bronze particles together, creating a solid matrix with a controlled, high porosity, often between 18-25% by volume.

The Self-Lubricating Mechanism

Unlike conventional bearings that rely on external lubrication systems, sintered bearings carry their own oil supply within millions of microscopic pores. As outlined in industry literature, these pores are subsequently filled with a lubricating oil via a vacuum impregnation process. This creates an internal reservoir. During operation, frictional heat and load cause the oil to migrate to the bearing surface, providing lubrication precisely when and where it is needed. This built-in mechanism is why these components are also known as oil-impregnated bearings or porous bearings, and it directly enables their low-maintenance, quiet operation.

The evolution of this bearing technology is deeply intertwined with advancements in powder metallurgy. A key moment occurred in 1930 with the development of a pioneering bushing by a major automotive corporation. This innovation involved pressing a mixture of copper, tin, and graphite powder and sintering it in an anaerobic furnace. It was an instant commercial success, with sales reaching approximately 500,000 units, demonstrating early on the market demand for reliable, self-contained lubrication solutions.

The properties of sintered bronze bearings—including self-lubrication, wear resistance, and the ability to operate under high loads—make them suitable for a vast array of demanding mechanical and tribological applications. Recent industry analyses confirm their widespread use across multiple sectors. Furthermore, their application extends to precision instruments, valves, electrical motors, switchgear, and heavy machinery used in construction and mining.
