Sintered bearings, also called oil-impregnated or porous bearings, are a Powder Metallurgy success. Unlike conventional bearings needing external systems, these parts carry lubricant within microscopic pores. The lubricant releases precisely when needed. This technology has led to a market shift. Industry reports note that bearing and bushing technologies are seeing growth exceeding 6%, driven by materials science advances. This is clear in applications where traditional lubricated bearings face problems like high temperatures or inaccessible locations.
The production of bronze-graphite bushings involves material preparation, molding, sintering, and final processing. A porous bronze base is created by sintering metal powder, yielding high wear resistance and good thermal conductivity. Graphite is added to reduce the friction coefficient. Powder producers exert significant control over performance by managing characteristics like purity, hydrogen loss, particle size and distribution, and particle shape. In the bronze system, shrinkage increases as particle size decreases.
Graphite-impregnated bronze bushings use graphite as the primary solid lubricant. This provides self-lubricating properties. It reduces or eliminates the need for external lubrication systems. These bushings are suited for low friction, high wear resistance, and operation under heavy loads. They are specified under standards like MPIF CTG-1000 and DIN SINT-B51. A low-oil-content, low-porosity material with high graphite content works better for oscillating and reciprocating motions. In these applications, building a consistent oil film is difficult.
The integration of sintered bronze with integrated solid lubricants removes external lubrication needs. This drastically cuts maintenance. These bearings are common in fractional-horsepower motors. Selection depends on the motion type and environmental conditions. The technology is a direct result of ongoing developments in PM compaction technology and sintering process optimization. We provide bearings meeting these specifications for engineers focused on reliable, maintenance-free operation.
